New Years Eve Live

Jesse and my drawing
Today I am writing about a lot of different subjects in one post.

This is a picture of my new years eve live drawing that I gave to Bob and Jesse for there 100th podcast birthday. I still cant believe that Jesse actually held my drawing. That is better than an actually famous person!

Sprocket and his cute little birthday hat

Yesterday was my dog, Sprocket's 2nd birthday and here a picture that I took of him wearing a hat that said Birthday Boy. I think he looks very adorable in it!
The last official podcast of the year aired yesterday with an interview with Brandon Gilberstadt and Kris Kachurak. And a free episode! You can listen to it here.
Have a Happy New Year! And you can listen to new years eve live on the radio today!

The End of Album 52

Now that album 52 had ended I am not sure what exactly I will post about but hopefully there will be new news about album 53. I think that some episode summaries and a better picture of the cover are due. So I will be looking forward to seeing them.
Yesterday I was listening to "The Mystery of the Clock Tower," and there is something that I don't understand. Why did Oliver Drevil lead Whit and Connie to his sons apartment and give them all of those clues when he was in on the robbery? Or did he not know about it until the end? Please answer that in the comments if you can.

Merry Christmas Eve

Merry Christmas Eve everybody! I highly doubt that I will have time to post tomorrow so I will do my Christmas post today.
One of the main parts of the traditional Christmas celebration is the giving of the gifts. I know that I can get very caught up in that part of Christmas. In fact I have spent most of last week getting all of my presents ready to be given away. And God does want us to have a giving spirit. But I think that
There are so many Adventures in Odyssey episodes, movies and songs that tell us to remember the real meaning of Christmas. I listen/watch them and yet I still brush it off and mainly think about the traditions, spending time with family and the getting and giving of presents. I still take the miracle birth of Jesus for granted.
This Christmas I want to actually remember to stop and enjoy Jesus (like Chris said). I will remember that while I go around celebrating Christmas I will actually celebrate him as well. I hope that you will do the same and have a merry Christmas!

Short Review: "Grandma's Christmas visit" and a Happy Birthday

This is going to be a very short review of, "Grandmas Christmas visit", for several reasons. It's almost Christmas and I am very busy and I really don't have a whole lot to say about this episode.

But besides my review I happen to know, by my amazing ability to never forget a birthday, that it is Jess Harnell's birthday. So we should all sing him Wooton's happy birthday song featured in, "Welcoming Wooton".  "Today is your Birthday happy happy birthday; today is your birthday happy birthday, hey!"

Now for my review: Like I said I don't have much to say about it because it was a little bit boring. I have probably listened to it only about five times out of the three months that I have had it. There wasn't a very good plot to it and I wasn't wondering thorough out the episode what was going to happen.
Connie was annoying in the scene where she was directing everything. I wish that they wouldn't have her yell so much.
I was glad that they had Matthew and Olivia play Mary and Joseph since they are siblings.
I don't understand why the Parker kids could say abualita earlier but then they all of a sudden forgot how to say it or something.
I also liked the ending it seemed very nice and Christmasy. And I love the character of Lucia I was very glad to see that she came back.
 I give it a 2.3/5.

So good bye, and happy birthday Jess Harnell!

Odyssey Scoop Give Away

For the Odyssey Scoop's 10th anniversary and Jacob Isom is having a drawing to give away two Odyssey prizes. The first winner will get a copy of the Novacom Collection, and the runner up will receive The Christmas classics. The drawing will take place December 22.

I absolutely love the Novacom Saga I listened to the whole thing just this week in less than 48 hours, I didn't even know that was possible. My cousin also loves it so I got her the Novacom collection for her birthday in July. So I got to see/listen to the bonus features as well.

They were absolutely wonderful. I was really looking forward to seeing the actors recording in the studio which was really cool but way too short. You can see that video in this podcast. But the one hour discussion was absolutely wonderful. You get to hear the actors writers and producers talk all about creating the whole story. So even if you don't win it is definitely worth buying.

Review:The Malted Milk Ball Falcon

The Malted Milk Ball Falcon

Summary:

A piƱata filled with delicious chocolate goes missing from Whit’s End. Only a few people were in the room at the scene of the crime, leading Emily Jones to investigate “whodunit!”

Review:

The Malted Milk Ball Falcon reminds me (as it probably does everybody) of "Broken Window."  Everyone was accusing each other and then it turns out that Mr.Whittaker is the culprit. From listening to this episode many times before I could tell where this episode was going.

I was very glad to see that Emily didn't once again solve the mystery with her amazing detective skills.

I also thought that Emily was unrealistically energetic after staying up "all night". Earlier she said, "That must have been during my hallucination faze. So how did she go from being so tiered that she was hallucinating to running from house to house solving a mystery? I don't know.

Acting/Characters:  Whit sounded a little bit more unwhit-like  than normal. I thought that it was especially bad when he said, "I know I can Emily." I like the sound on Andre's voice but it just doesn't sound at all like Whit. I almost don't even think of this whit and the old whit as the same person. And what I mean by that is that it doesn't seem possible that the new Whit could have known Jimmy or that the old Whit could know Emily or Barrett.
I have really started to like Jay a lot. I think (although my mom doesn't agree with me) that Jay is better than Rodney. I think he's funny and he seems more like the type of person that teases people but doesn't physically hurt them. And Rodney was just getting too old, he first appeared in album 7 and stuck around until his last appearance in album 49. He was picking on kids from the generation of Isaac Morton to kids like Grady McKay. I think that it was way past time for him to move on.
Georgina Cordova does an absolutely amazing job of doing Nelson. I often forget that he is played by a girl.

Humor: This episode was also funny. I found a lot of humor in jay and in my favorite line, "You took more bathroom breaks than a hyperactive puppy."

Lesson: Last time it seemed as though the writers came up with a good  (having the Parker kids go crazy) and then throwing in a lesson about responsibility. This time the lesson about honesty seemed like it actually was the point of the show. I also was glad to hear Whit mention God, "The only money that God will honor is the money that you come by honestly."

I liked this episode a lot I give it 4.5/5.

Behind the Scenes of "The Fundamentals"

File:21front-old.jpg"This episode was written in part to help promote Focus on the Family's basketball camps. It also features the appearance of an adult character named Alex Jefferson. In "The Eternal Birthday" (album 33), we introduced a kid character named Alex Jefferson because we forgot that we'd  already used that name for a basketball player."

Review: An Agreeable Nanny

An Agreeable Nanny

Summary:

The Parker family kids are convinced that they are too grown-up for a babysitter. A parents’ night out, a nanny named Maria, and the neighbor’s dog Bruno may be their opportunity to prove themselves.

 Review:

Acting/Characters: I thought that the kids were oddly bad since a few minuets ago they were trying to convince their parents that they were responsible. And Camilla was deliberately disobedient by watching what she knew was a bad movie after Maria told her to make sure that it was appropriate.
I also think that it would have been cool if the babysitter was Gloria McCoy. Even though she would be way out of collage by now, but Odyssey time doesn't make sense anyway.

Sound: I did have too turn the volume down during the hectic scene with the fire alarm. And the sound affects in the banana fight were realistic but disgusting.

Lesson: The lesson was weak. It was another one about being responsible and we already had one or two of those in album 51.

  I give it 3/5.

"But Not Forgoten" Sound Bite

I know I didn't do this last week, I did wake up at 2:00 that day (Black Friday) to go shopping (It was oddly fun and I don't even like shopping) so I was out of it the rest of the day and that's my excuse for forgetting. And I barley remembered to do it today.
This is by Dave Arnold from the episode right after Whit left in "Gone...".

"The scene in, 'But Not Forgotten,' might sound a little too real, my son, Landon, is an adult now, but at the time, he played the role of scrub. We were in the studio recording his lines, but he wasn't getting into the emotion of the scene very well. We kept giving him direction and after a while it got too much for the little guy, and the tears started to flow. Instead of stopping to console him we realized that we should get the lines in while he was feeling the emotion of the part. The result was a powerful scene and a lot of razzing from my friends about being a heartless father. (By the way Landon was fine afterward and we have a great relationship to this day. Phew!)"
  - The Official Guide p.239

Even though that is kind of sad it did make a wonderful scene!

Review: A Thankstaking Story

  A Thankstaking Story

Summary:

On a snowy Thanksgiving day, Whit, Connie, Eugene, and a few of their friends end up stuck at Whit’s End. To pass the time, they tell a zany story of the Scrunch and his plan for Thankstaking.

Review:

Plot/writing: It was hard for me to listen to this episode all the way through, I kept listening to the first part and then when they started singing I would move onto another episode. But I liked the ending more than the beginning and the more I listen to it the more I like it.
Also Connie was completely overreacting about her cell phone. I think that they could have had her be frustrated but not so annoying and obnoxious.

Acting/Characters: Connie in the beginning really annoyed me which is sad because generally in the earlyest albums she was one of my favorite characters. But in the end she wasn't overacting and that was more like what she used to be.

Humor: The jokes were obviously not extremely funny at all, but not really bad.

Lesson: I did like the lesson which made the episode a lot better.

  I give it 3.5/5.

Interveiw with Kari Wahlgren

In the official podcast #109, Kari Wahlgren who performed in both Gloria McCoy and Maria (In "An Agreeable Nanny") talks about her experience with FOTF, the characters that she played, and the other roles that she played.
Jesse also talks to Ben Fisk who's brothers, both played characters on AIO. You can listen to it here.

Review:Square One

Square One

Summary:
Matthew Parker joins a mysterious new club and refuses to tell Emily Jones about their activities. Emily decides that this is a mystery that she must solve.

Review:

Plot/writing: I thought that this episode was a little bit boring, but not bad. I think that it would have been better if it would have had another plot. It sort of had two plots but it was more like 1 1/2. There was the one about the club and the one about Matthew and Emily's friendship. I would have liked something a little bit more interesting.
And also the club wasn't very important or suspenseful like you would think a secret club would be.

Acting/Characters: I don't know if anyone else noticed this but the only real kid actor was Matthew in this episode. Pete, Ryan and Emily are all played by adults and whats even weirder Nelson is played by an adult woman. I think that the only really convincing actors/actress were Georgina Cordova and Adam Wylie. Christina Pucclli is pretty good to but Robin Knight was not very good and didn't sound like someone in high school much less someone in middle school.
I thought that the characters that were selected for the club were kind of weird because in the Kidsboro series both Ryan and Pete didn't seem like smarty kind of kids. But it was good to see Matthew spending time with other friends besides Emily.
At the beginning Emily was really annoying but at the end her character seemed to get better in the end.

Lesson: this episode also had a good lesson about trust. And hopefully this will improve Emily's character and she will now treat Matthew better.

Over all it was pretty good, I will give it 3/5.

Behind the scenes of "A Capsule Comes to Town"

Behind the Scenes: A Capsule Comes to Town

This was a long one so I only posted the first paragraph.
"This episode featured the documentary that Connie started working on in, "A Chip of the Shoulder" (album 49). It was presented as an episode of a fictional series called At Home in My Town. We persuaded Focus on the Family commentator  Stuart Shepard to play the host. It is the only episode that doesn't feature Chris's voice anywhere in the program."
- The Official Guide p.489

Since reading this I have heard Stuart Shepherd on a Christian radio program and I thought that it was AIO when he said, "and I am Stuart Shepherd," just like in, "A Capsual comes to town."

Review: The Owlnapping

The Owlnapping

Summary:
When the Odyssey Middle School basketball team’s mascot is stolen, they suddenly start losing all their games. The team considers drastic measures to get back their good luck charm.

Review:

Plot/Summary: I thought that the first scene when Murray is meeting with Vance was a little exaggerated, but that was okay since it made the episode more exiting.
It really freaked me out when Ryan ran into the theater and yelled, "Princess Baba is really the twin of Prince Jessup." (or however you spell that) I thought that he said Prince Jessa and although I was thrilled to hear my name on AIO I didn't like that it was referred to as a boy name. I have never heard of anyone else named Jessa Much less a boy. So I had to listen to that part over and over again until I heard Vance say Jessup (or at least I hope that is what it was). And my brother agreed with me.
Please comment and tell me what you think he said.

Characters/Acting: I am really surprised that I haven't heard anyone mentioning that Pete is played by Robin Knight (Seth Young). This drove me crazy the whole episode. Even though Seth wasn't a main character he was in four episodes it really bothered me.
I also didn't like the acting of Brad when he follows Pete and says really loud and over the top, "Did you make the exchange!" If he was wondering if he made the exchange I would think that he would whisper it or something.
And the voices of the other players behind Brad sounded more like adults instead of kids in middle school.
I was really glad to see Ryan and Coach Fang back. And I couldn't help but notice that Vance was voiced by a different actor.

Humor: I loved the appearance of Coach Fang. I love his poetic stuff that always relates to nature. Especially when he said, "Be shot through the hoop yourself. Be the hoop. Be the scoreboard increasing by two when you shoot yourself through yourself.

Lesson: The lesson that God is the only on that has power was very spiritual.

Overall loved it except for a few flaws in the acting, and the misuse of my name (if it was used at all). I will give it a 8.5/10.

Behind the scenes

Behind the Scenes: The Buck Starts Here
"The original title, "The Parable of the Entrepreneur, the Sock Shooter, and the Ditch-Digger," had to be changed because the long name wouldn't fit on the cassette-tape labels."
-The Official Guide p.340
In my opinion this would be a much cooler title. Now I am off to Nevada city for the weekend!!

Review: Opposite Day

Opposite Day

Summary:
Odyssey Middle School's “Opposite Day” inspires Olivia Parker to become friends with a girl who is nothing like her.
Meanwhile, Barrett Jones becomes obsessed with getting as many online friends as possible.

Review:

Plot/Writing: This episode did not quite keep my entertainment level. I was surprised about this because it was written by Kathy Buchanan who is one of my favorite writers. But that didn't bother me very much at all.

Humor: I thought that Wooton was disappointingly not very funny. Not much to say about the humor because there wasn't much.

Characters/Acting: The biggest shock and disappointment in the acting was of course Barrett's voice. Just when I was getting over his really bad performance in, "Game for a Mystery."
The voice's of all the girl characters confused me the first time I listened to the episode. And of course Amber's Laugh got on my nerves the first time I heard it.
Does anyone know who Georgina Cordova played? In the end Chris said her name in the credits but I couldn't figure out who she was.

Lesson: Club Kid Chat was obviously code for Facebook. And while you shouldn't spend too much time on it especially when you are Barrett's age, your Facebook friends are also your real friends not just random people. I thought that both of the lessons were pretty good.

Most people have said that they did not like this episode at all! My thoughts are more neutral. It was by far not my favorite episode of the season, but I didn't hate it so I would give it a 2/5.

Fact Friday

Every Friday (as long as I can remember to do it) I will be posting a fact that I think is interesting from "The Official Guide." Here is the first one...
Sound Bites: "When we were recording 'The Life of the Party,'we accidentally misquoted the bible by having a character say, 'What you reap you shall also sow.' With careful editing, the sound designers fixed the line to it's correct rendering, 'What you sow, you shall also reap.' When you listen to this episode see if you can tell."

Interview with Writer Kathy Buchanan

The official podcast #107 came out today! Writer Kathy Buchanan talkes about the episode that she wrote, "Opposite Day."
She also answers the ever present question, is Mitch coming back? No, he isn't coming back! But I am happy about that because I think that it would not live up to the listeners expectations. And besides have you ever thought about how weird Connie Mitchell sounds!

Review: Fast as I Can

Fast as I can

Summary:

Wooton Bassett, Eugene Meltsner, Connie Kendall, and Matthew Parker try to apply the discipline of fasting and, through their comedic antics, realize that it’s far more difficult than they imagined.

Review:

Plot/writing: I was glad to see that this episode was written by  some of our old friends, Paul McCusker and Marshal Younger. I think that it balanced all of the newness with a wonderfully written episode!

Humor: I thought that a few scenes in this episode were especially funny. Like the one where they are telling what there fasts are about. I loved it when Wooton said, "I know you are fasting wearing every color but green." Or Matthew saying,"I e-mailed her that I thought she was wrong but she wouldn't let it go."

Acting/Characters: I was very glad to see that Mrs. Randolph was back. It gave the scenes with Wooton in it a very old feel.

Lesson: I really connected with this lesson because while I haven't ever fasted eating food I have fasted from listening to AIO, going on AIO websites or reading the official guide for a whole week. I didn't even talk about it and discus all of my thoughts and theories with my mom or cousin as they did their best to listen. It was ironically inspired by the episode, "The Meaning of Sacrifice."

This was very hard for me especially because it was in the summer and in the summer AIO is all I do. I draw Odyssey characters, I even take notes on a piece of paper about an album. I research that album and put the piece of paper in the album so then when I open the album I can read facts about is! And every night I fall asleep with AIO playing (I take it everywhere even backpacking). I had trouble going to sleep the whole week! But it did get me to focus on other things beside Odyssey and I had time for other things.

So I thought that this episode had a lesson that I was able to apply to my life because while I don't want to fast from food I can fast from something else. And Matthews fast probably applies to everyone who has an AIO blog.

Over all I think that "Fast As I Can" deserves 5/5 stars!

Dear Focus on the Family,

This week in school I had to write a business letter to someone and so (of course) I wrote to Focus on the Family.  First of all I should say that I do not really agree with all of the criticism of albums 51 and 52. They aren't my favorite albums but I do really like them. I think that we should give FOTF suggestions but I don't want to constantly be telling them that they are doing a bad job. I want to be encouraging to them since I do LOVE AIO. So here is a portion of that letter.

Dear Focus on the Family,

I am a big fan of Adventures in Odyssey. I have been listening since I was six years old, and I now have all 52 albums.  I listen to it every day and love reading “The Official Guide.” I have really enjoyed the past two albums that you have put out even though they have gotten a lot of criticism from AIO websites and reviews. But there are a few suggestions that I would like to make.

A lot of people have said that they want the “old Odyssey back” and I think that what they mean is that they miss seeing Connie and Eugene growing in there relationships with each other and God.

It seems to me that Connie has lost a lot of her personality. And what I mean by that is that she used to always be falling and then getting back up and learning from her mistakes. She was always seemed like so much fun to be around. Now she is more irritable and Katie Leigh’s acting seems to be a little bit over the top.

I would also like to see the kids of Odyssey being more spiritual. I miss it when I would hear kids making spiritual choices for themselves; such as in “Choices” when Lucy had to make the decision of whether or not to write the article about evolution. Or where Robin chose not to go to the party in “The Courage to stand” and when she decided to study her bible in “A Worker Approved.”  Those are episodes that now, at fourteen I can still apply to my life.

Review: Stage Fright

This Review is of a not yet aired episode, but it does not contain any spoiling information.

Stage fright
Summary:

Barrett Jones couldn’t be more excited about getting the lead role in the school play. But when his first practice is interrupted by a mysterious booming voice, Emily Jones must investigate the “phantom of the school play.”

Review:

Plot/Writing:  I really loved this episode! I thought that it was both exiting and suspenseful.
I was glad to hear that there was a new theater and theater owner for the first time since album 15. And by doing this they avoided the questions of what happened to Edwin Blackgaard.
The one thing that I didn’t enjoy was at the beginning when Emily and Matthew were checking to see who got what part in the play. Emily again was so bossy telling Matthew what he did and didn’t want. I thought that it was unrealistic and annoying.

Acting/Characters:  I was very glad to see the character of Priscilla Peterson is back. I was thinking that she would only be a one time character. The only problem that I had with her is that Gatlin Green (Priscilla) sounds a lot like Christina Puccelli (Emily) and it’s hard to tell them apart.

Humor:  I thought that the character of Charlie Stolfitz was really funny! I loved the voice that Jess Harnell did for him.

Lesson:  The lesson of this episode (in my opinion) was the best of the season. It dealt with irrational fear, which I have a lot of. And it also discussed not letting fear scare you out of pursuing your talents.

Overall as I have said many times through out this review I LOVED it! I give it 5/5 stars.

Review: Wooton's Broken Pencil Show

Wooton’s Broken Pencil Show
Summary:
In a last-minute replacement, Wooton Bassett hosts his own Kid's Radio show and is forced to ad-lib for a half-hour. Will his show have a point?
Review:
Plot/Writing:  The plot of this show did not follow the usual structure of an episode; that’s okay but in this case I didn’t enjoy it. Between Eugene’s Science by design, Connie’s car alarm going off and Wooton’s Captain absolutely show I thought that it was too confusing.
Acting:   The acting in this episode had the usual ups and downs of an Odyssey episode. I thought that Jess Harnell did a wonderful job in both Wooton and Captain Absolutely.
On the other hand I did not like Andre Stojka’s performance much as Thug Clockripper so much. His voice was a little bit too high and sounded kind of annoying.
Humor:   Of course this episode did have some funny moments since it was focused around Wooton but it was not as funny as I had hoped for. I thought that the funniest part was when Wooton did the wrap up of the show.

Lesson: The lesson, due to the writing and plot was also confusing. I didn’t really see how Connie’s car alarm going off, the science by design and the fact that entertainment should have a point really connect.
Overall I thought that this episode was a little bit sloppy and disorganized, but at times was humorous I would give it a 3/5.

Odyssey: Stuck in the past

The Odyssey scoop posted an article today written by Marvin Grant about the fact that Odyssey is really stuck in the past. I did both agree with this article and disagree so here are my thoughts.
The matter about Katrina I thought was way over exaggerated. From the article, I got the impression that the Odyssey team had said that they were not going to bring Katrina back but they did by popular demand. But this is what I herd from FOTF, they actually didn't want to bring Katrina back for simply the sake of saying hello. They wanted to bring her back later when they really had a place for her.
And also in a "Thankstaking Story" Eugene did mention Katrina and when he did he spoke very highly of her.
On the other hand what I did agree with was the fact that Eugene and Connie shouldn't be fighting quite so much. I mean Connie and Eugene are both adults and Christians and even though nobody is perfect I think they should be doing their best to overcome their bickering.
I do think that it would be good for them to get on with their lives. They should be showing some sort of growth as Christians after twenty-two years. So anyways I thought that this article was well written and did have some good points. If you want to read it go to http://www.odysseyscoop.com/articles/article36.htm

Album #53 Cover

This is the first view of the cover for album #53! Or maybe they are tricking us and it's really #54 since they made them at the same time. Well I guess we will find out soon! It looks like the picture is of Whit, Matthew and another girl it might be Connie, Emily or maybe a new character completely.
I was also wondering if anyone would mind if I posted some reviews of episodes that haven't come out yet, so if you do please comment.

Priscilla Peterson

This is my drawing of Priscilla. Or at least it's what I think she looks like. This is actually the first time I have ever drawn a character without knowing what they really look like. I was a little bit disappointed when I scanned this drawing and saw that it isn't as dark on the computer as it is in real life.
For those of you that don't have album 52 Priscilla was in "Opposite Day,"Stage Fright" and "The Malted Milkball Falcon."

Mystery of the Clock Tower Review

This is a review of both parts to "Mystery of the Clock Tower", but don't worry I didn't give anything away.

Mystery of the Clock Tower
Part 1 and 2

Summary:
Part 1
Eugene Meltsner and Matthew Parker investigate why the clock tower at City Hall seems to be stuck at 11:45. Could it have something to do with the anniversary of a lost love from twenty years ago?
Part 2
In spite of Eugene's best efforts, the computer that controls the town clock is not responding and now the clock has begun a backwards countdown to a potential disaster. But who is behind the plot and why? Is a broken heart to blame? Can the mystery be solved before it's too late?

Review:
Plot:  First off I should say that I did like the plot and writing of these two episodes. While it kept my interest the whole time I thought it was a little bit complicated. I think that they should try to keep the plots simple for the age group that they are writing for. It’s hard to get a balance between the two extremes of being too complicated and being boring.

Acting: This was the first appearance of the new Odyssey mayor, Spencer Hicks. I thought that Dave Fennoy did a wonderful job! I really love his voice. I hope he starts to become more of a main character.
I think that Andre Stojka is starting to get used to his role and I think that I as a listener am getting more used to him. The only think that he could work on is his Whit laugh I think it’s still a little bit too high and not quite gentle enough.

Lesson:  The lesson for these episodes was being sure your sins will find you out. I found this episode to have a very spiritual aspect to it witch is always nice. I don’t like an episode as much when the lesson is so vague.

Over all I loved this episode and I thought that it was a great choice to start the season off with. I would give it 4/5.
